Employee Motivation and Its Importance

Motivating employees is one of the toughest jobs that officials in management are tasked with. Without motivation, any type of business that relies on human resource is bound to go down. Wise entrepreneurs embrace the belief that the true staying power of their businesses depend on the ability of their employees to come up with bright ideas, persevere at times of adversity, and display a sense of loyalty that makes them admirable leaders in the eyes of others - and their businesses, stronger than ever. Without motivation, employees are likely to slack off, leaving their bosses to do even the minutest details that are theirs to worry about in the first place. With this kind of setback, a business can suffer from internal problems that can affect its overall performance in the market. Without motivation, employees are also likely to lose productivity, which is important if a business were to beat the competition. Productivity is the essence of human resource, without which there can be no progress. The business itself is not the only thing that can suffer from lack of employee motivation. Both the business owners and the employees may deteriorate physically, emotionally, and psychologically. When the workplace is filled with employees that are not participative in decision-making and other affairs, the stress will affect everyone around.

What Needs to Be Done

The key to motivating employees is making the workplace an exciting playground for intellectual intercourse, and this can only be done by providing employees with the opportunities they need to showcase what they are made of - what they are capable of achieving, what they are dying to share with the company they are working for. People who are hired to do something would like to feel that they can actually contribute something to the organization that hired them; otherwise, they'd feel like puppets or display accessories. More often than not, employees are stuck in positions that do not encourage them to speak out or do not seek their opinion at all. Any person capable of human emotions knows how bad it feels to be suppressed and repressed. The first thing the management staff must do is to let their employees know they are depended on, trusted, and regarded with worth.

This may sound difficult to accomplish, but on the contrary, acknowledging the presence of employees does not require the brains of a genius. A simple greeting or nod whenever they are around is a good start. Knowing their names, especially their first names, is another tip. But even better than merely acknowledging them is setting up grounds for recognition. Employees in general tend to work better when they know that there is competition - and that there are rewards that await their good performance. Moreover, instead of generalizing the applause, it has proven effective in motivating employees to single out commendations from time to time or when called for. This makes the employee who is singled out feel very much appreciated - and the other employees, highly challenged to improve their performance.
